28 // What To Do When You Get Triggered

See this content in the original post

I was asked by a client in a group I was facilitating recently what she should do when she gets emotionally triggered.

We had been doing work on Menstrual Cycle Awareness and nervous system regulation together. It was a great question.

This week's podcast is inspired by this question. I do my best to answer this from my point of view.

We discuss what happens in our body when we get triggered, the times we are more vulnerable to being triggered, why we can get triggered, and how to move through and away from the emotional trigger.

Coaching Questions Mentioned:

  • Name the emotion

  • What is this emotion communicating to me?

  • What is not ok with me and why?

  • What boundary has been crossed?

  • Has a boundary I didn't know I had been crossed?

  • Look at the situation: is your emotional trigger justified?

  • What uncommunicated expectation am I holding here?

  • What have I not communicated?

  • What assumptions have I made?

  • What clients do I need to get?

Episodes mentioned:
Make sure you listen to the Inner Critic Series:
Part 1: Meet the Critic
Part 2: Boundary the Critic
Part 3: Befriend the Critic
Part 4: Integrate the Critic
